Bangladesh Vs India
1st test day 4, 2024
10:00 AM
04:00 AM GMT / 09:30 AM LOCAL
On Day 4 of the 1st Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai, India
remained in a commanding position, tightening their grip on the match.
Bangladesh, chasing a mammoth target of 515 set by India, resumed their second
innings at 158/4 but faced immense pressure from India’s disciplined bowling
attack.
India's first innings total of 376 had been bolstered by a century from
Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and a well-crafted 86 from Ravindra Jadeja.
Bangladesh had struggled in their first innings, managing only 149 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah, with 4 wickets, and Siraj, with 2 wickets,
decimated Bangladesh’s batting
lineup. The Indian bowlers exploited the conditions, with the spinners finding
sharp turn and bounce on a pitch that became increasingly challenging to bat on
In the second innings, Bangladesh showed more fight. Najmul Hossain Shanto
played a valiant knock of 51, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
Ashwin, who had gone wicketless in the first innings, made a strong comeback,
claiming three crucial wickets and
leading India’s spin attack. Shanto’s resistance came to an end when Ashwin
trapped him with a turning delivery, and with Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur
Rahim also back in the pavilion, Bangladesh's hopes of saving the Test dwindled,
As Day 4 progressed, India maintained their dominance, applying relentless
pressure with both spin and pace. With the pitch offering significant
assistance to the spinners, Bangladesh’s chances of pulling off a miraculous
chase were slim. They needed over 350 runs
with only six wickets remaining, and
the task seemed insurmountable. India’s fielding was also exceptional, with KL
Rahul’s diving catch to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim being a highlight of the day
Despite some rain in the forecast, India were firmly in control, looking
set to wrap up the match on Day 4 or early on Day 5. The hosts were on the
brink of taking a 1-0 lead in the series, while Bangladesh faced the uphill
task of surviving against an Indian side that had thoroughly outplayed them
over the first four days
