Bangladesh vs India test match day 2
Bangladesh vs India test match day 2 20 sep 2024
Day 2 of the first Test match between Bangladesh and India, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 20, 2024, saw the momentum shift after India’s dominant batting performance at the end of Day 1. India resumed at a commanding 339/6, with Ravichandran Ashwin unbeaten on 102 and Ravindra Jadeja nearing his century at 86*. Their stellar partnership, which had already put Bangladesh under pressure, set the tone for India to push for a massive first-innings total.
Bangladesh, having opted to bowl first, initially had India in trouble at 176/6 on Day 1, thanks to an inspired spell by Hasan Mahmud. The right-arm seamer was lethal in the early overs, dismissing India’s top-order, including key players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. His figures of 4/58 were the highlight for Bangladesh on Day 1
However, India’s lower order, led by Ashwin and Jadeja, dug in with a stunning 195-run stand that carried over into Day 2, frustrating the Bangladeshi bowlers further.
As play resumed on the second day, Ashwin and Jadeja continued to bat with great discipline. Ashwin, having already reached his century the previous day, looked comfortable, exploiting the bounce and turn of the Chennai pitch. Jadeja, too, played with composure, mixing caution with aggression as he inched closer to his hundred. Their partnership grew, crossing the 200-run mark, a testament to their resilience against a Bangladesh bowling attack that struggled to find breakthroughs on Day 2. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had claimed a wicket on Day 1, bowled tirelessly, but the Indian batters played him with ease.
The pitch at Chennai began to dry out, and though it offered some turn and bounce for the spinners, it wasn’t enough to trouble the well-set Indian batsmen. Ashwin, a Chennai native, looked at home on this surface. His experience at this ground, combined with the support of Jadeja, who has been one of India’s most reliable all-rounders, helped India pile on the runs. Jadeja eventually reached his century, marking his return to form with a much-needed Test hundred
Bangladesh’s bowlers toiled hard but lacked the sharpness they showed in the first session of Day 1. Hasan Mahmud, who had looked threatening earlier, seemed to lose his rhythm as the partnership dragged on. The visitors also missed opportunities in the field, which compounded their difficulties. Bangladesh's captain tried rotating his bowlers, bringing back pacers and giving spinners extended spells, but none could break the Ashwin-Jadeja partnership for the majority of the second day.
Eventually, after building a massive first-innings total, India declared their innings, leaving Bangladesh with a formidable task ahead. The declaration gave India plenty of time to test the Bangladeshi batters on a pitch that was beginning to wear, offering assistance to both spinners and pacers. India’s bowling attack, featuring world-class spinners like Ashwin and Jadeja, would be crucial on this track.
Bangladesh’s openers faced a tricky session towards the end of Day 2. India’s pacers, fresh and hungry, used the new ball effectively to exploit the slight movement off the pitch. The Bangladeshi openers had to be cautious, knowing that a few quick wickets could put them under immense pressure. However, they managed to navigate through the final overs of the day, ending Day 2 without losing a wicket but still staring at a massive deficit
As Day 3 approaches, Bangladesh will be hoping to mount a strong response with the bat, but India’s bowling attack, especially Ashwin on a turning track, will be eager to make early inroads. India’s position in the match looks strong, and unless Bangladesh can put up a significant batting effort, they face an uphill battle to avoid a follow-on or worse, an innings defeat
