Srilanka VS Newzealand 2nd test match day 1, 2024
The first day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on September 26, 2024, at Galle International Stadium was a balanced affair, with both teams having their moments. Sri Lanka, who won the toss and opted to bat first, were aware of Galle’s reputation as a spinner-friendly pitch that deteriorates as the game progresses, making batting first crucial.

The hosts started cautiously, with openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka dealing with the early movement generated by New Zealand’s pace duo of Tim Southee and Matt Henry. Despite the challenging conditions, Sri Lanka managed to put together a solid opening stand before Nissanka fell to a well-directed delivery from Henry shortly before lunch. His dismissal left Sri Lanka at a modest 50-1.

After lunch, New Zealand’s bowlers, particularly Southee and Ajaz Patel, turned up the pressure. Patel, exploiting the turn and bounce from the Day 1 pitch, dismissed Angelo Mathews after a promising partnership with captain Dhananjaya de Silva. De Silva anchored Sri Lanka’s innings with a gritty knock, showing resilience despite the loss of wickets at the other end

Rain disrupted play in the afternoon, delaying the match for over an hour. When the game resumed, the weather conditions made the pitch slightly more favorable for the bowlers. New Zealand capitalized on this, with Patel claiming the crucial wicket of Dinesh Chandimal, further unsettling the Sri Lankan lineup.

At stumps, Sri Lanka finished the day at a vulnerable yet competitive position, with de Silva still at the crease. New Zealand’s bowlers, especially Patel, had kept the match finely balanced by picking up key wickets. The forecast for more rain in the following days adds another layer of uncertainty to the Test, making the first session of Day 2 pivotal for both sides.
