In the 2nd ODI between Ireland and South Africa on October 4, 2024, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, South Africa secured another dominant performance following their comfortable win in the first ODI. Coming off a 139-run victory earlier in the series, South Africa was determined to seal the series, while Ireland aimed to bounce back and level things up.
South Africa batted first, aiming to post another competitive total. Their openers got off to a stable start, but like in the previous match, early wickets caused some concern. Once again, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs played pivotal roles in stabilizing the innings after South Africa lost three wickets early on. Their impressive partnership laid a solid foundation, as both players scored fluently, building on their form from the first ODI. Rickelton narrowly missed out on his century again, and Stubbs contributed handsomely, both showcasing excellent stroke play.
Ireland's bowling attack, led by Mark Adair and Craig Young, managed to slow down the scoring in patches, with Adair particularly effective in taking key wickets at crucial moments. However, South Africa’s middle and lower order chipped in valuable runs to push their total to a competitive score, much like they did in the previous match.
Ireland’s response with the bat was once again troubled by South Africa’s varied bowling attack. Lizaad Williams and Lungi Ngidi continued their form from the first match, consistently applying pressure on the Irish top order. Ireland struggled to build partnerships, with only a few players showing resistance. The South African spinners, including Bjorn Fortuin, were able to stifle the Irish chase, making scoring difficult in the middle overs.
The Proteas’ bowlers maintained their discipline throughout, and Ireland’s batters found it difficult to keep up with the required run rate. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals, and despite some brief fightbacks from Ireland's middle order, they were bowled out well short of the target.
With this victory, South Africa clinched the ODI series, while Ireland will look to salvage some pride in the third and final ODI of the series. The Proteas' combination of aggressive batting and disciplined bowling proved too much for Ireland, who will need to rethink their approach ahead of the final match.
